Noble Marine 2019 Scammonden Water Open

Scammonden Water SC 2019 Noble Marine Traveller Series Open Race Report.

Sunday 19th May was the Scammonden Water Supernova Open.

The forecast for the day was for light but strengthening shifty breeze and this indeed transpired to be the case.

Three club members and six visitors lined up to take on the challenge; some old friends returning and some new to Scammonden; all were greeted with glorious scenery and initially light shifty winds.

After the race briefing given by Paul, the OOD, the fleet set sail for the first race at 11am. After three laps of close sailing Garry Butterfield came first with Ian Moodie closely behind in second, following in third was Scammonden's own Steve Yates.

A superb lunch with waitress service followed, accompanied by much talk of shift spotting, roll tacking and roll gybing into lulls or headers.

All set sail invigorated for the second race. David Scott took an early lead until the rest of the fleet reeled him in. Tony Bleasdale then took the lead until the last beat when Garry Butterfield found some pressure against the far bank and took the win, with Tony second and Ian Moodie third.

The forecast improvement in breeze dutifully arrived for the third race, which was back to back. Derrick Jackson took an early lead but was soon passed by Garry. After four laps Garry was still in the lead with Steve Yates second and Derrick Jackson finishing third.

Despite the challenging conditions the whole fleet had a very competitive and satisfying sailing day.

Overall results:

1st Garry Butterfield, Bartley SC

2nd Steve Yates, Scammonden Water SC

3rd Ian Moodie, Bolton SC

Thanks to all who attended and see you all soon.
