Noble Marine - Bartley Open - Results

Sunday, 18th October saw the final open meeting of the 2015 Supernova Travellers Circuit sponsored by Noble Marine. The event was being hosted by Bartley Sailing Club, a good large lake in the Midlands. Despite a fairly poor wind forecast 23 visitors arrived to make an impressive fleet of 32 boats (yet another over 30+ turnout for the Supernovas this year) and as usual there was very close racing throughout the fleet.

The Race Officer took an early decision to hold the first two races back to back allowing us to make the most of the force 3 breeze. Local fleet captain Garry Butterfield took advantage of a lift along the bank to reach the windward mark first, closely followed by [Inland Champion] Mike Gibson, [National Champion] Cliff Milliner and [Class Chairman] Chris Hawley. Mike and Cliff soon pulled ahead and once they did Mike made sure he gave Cliff no opportunities to take the lead, third place went to the Chris.

The second race followed the same course and after one lap the leader was Alan Bishop, with Cliff, Mike and [2015 Noble Marine Travellers champion] Alex Collins in close pursuit. Alan showed a momentary lapse in concentration and thought he was sailing to the wrong mark (he wasn't!). This allowed Mike to close the gap and eventually fight his way to the front to get a second win, securing first place overall, followed by Alan and Alex.

After a hearty lunch the wind had almost completely died, but the third race proceeded nonetheless. A general recall rattled some of the fleet and in the restart a number of boats were OCS, with only a few returning. Alex took an early lead with Mike in second and the two of them went on to provide some entertainment by giving a "master class" in light wind roll tacking with Alex successfully covering Mike for a large part of the race. Another local boat, Steve Hawley recovered from a poor start with good upwind speed to slip past Cliff and a number of other boats to take third place.
