...Severn SC - Open - 18th April 2009

A record supernova turnout at Severn Sailing Club saw 14 visitors join the 6 home. Local logistics meant that the fleet had to be split into 2 flights. With the wind set to ease and turn to an easterly direction conditions were going to be challenging.

Race 1 saw local boats away to a good start with Hawley brothers establishing an early lead. Cliff Milner, Richard Pakes and Mike Gibson got away to lead the second flight. There was close racing across the fleet, but after a fleet / time correction Steve Hawley won followed by Chris Hawley and Richard Pakes.

Race 2 saw the fleets reversed. The same pattern emerged from the previous race, but with Richard Pakes's retirement Milner was uncontested in his flight. Steve Hawley and Chris Hawley battled closely, but only for Steve to get ahead and take race honours. Chris was in for second, followed by Milner, Dave Harris and Mike Gibson.

The third race resulted in the flights changing around to create an in contention fleet. Chris Hawley got the best start followed by Milner, with Gibson OCS S Hawley closely followed. Gibson recovered and it became a close fought battle. With Milner doing penalty turns Gibson slipped through and took line honours. S Hawley took C Hawley leaving him to defend Milner on the last lap.

With difficult wind conditions close racing was seem through out the fleet.
