Twenty boats - including seven from Haversham - gathered for the customary closely fought South Cerney Open. The wind was light and variable: ideal for the responsive Supernovas.
In the first race, former National Champion Mike Gibson got clean away in his superb new black boat. Chris Hawley also sailed a very consistent race in second. Travellers Champ Richard Pakes showed cunning speed and tactics to work his way up after a poor start, finishing third on a course that made overtaking quite difficult.
The wind shifted over lunch and the second race was a more even contest, with Richard working his way to the front and staying there. After much place changing, Steve Hawley managed to get in front brother Chris, finishing second and third. That left everything to play for.
Jean Simmons had been improving in every race and took the lead in race three. However, the runs were tricky and Mike slipped past to win. Jean just managed to hold Richard off by choosing the Committee boat end at the finish. Brother Norman got a second fourth. That made Mike the overall winner.
