It was August but you wouldn't have known it from the weather – Force 4 with stronger gusts and shifty but also raining. Despite this fifteen boats travelled to join the one home sailor, two of them coming all the way from Kielder Water.
The first race saw a slow start with Jeff Tucker first over but a bit far down the line, Paul Undrell was on his heels and quickly tacked onto port managing to cross the rest of the fleet, it was his race all the way, first round the windward mark and having established a good lead by the second mark he stayed ahead until the finish. The next four boats also broke away from the rest of the fleet, but Richard Pakes took second followed by Jeff Mountain. Many capsizes and several incorrect courses made for entertaining racing for spectators. Congratulations to Ruth Hawkin who persevered despite several capsizes one before the race even started but didn't give up despite being a long way behind until she unfortunately got the mast stuck in the mud and had to be rescued in the last lap.
The second race saw Dave Everett being a bit too hasty to start, and several boats being pushed out at the windward end, two stayed on the beach. Richard Pakes got a good start and by the windward mark he followed fairly closely by Jeff Mountain, Paul Undrell and Sam Hood had split from the rest of the fleet. This time Richard opened a big lead, which he maintained to the finish followed by Paul Undrell and Jeff Mountain.
All to sail for in race three with Richard and Paul having a first and second each. Richard did not have a good start but managed to pull through the fleet by sailing down the middle in a shifty wind. He was close on the heels of Jeff Mountain who was first at the windward mark. Jeff Tucker was third round followed closely by Paul Undrell. Jeff made a bad mark rounding on the third mark letting Richard through, but they sailed tack for tack up most of the next beat before Richard had yet again pulled ahead by keeping to the middle. He gradually pulled further and further ahead. Jeff stayed in second place until the gooseneck broke in the last half of the race, letting Jeff Tucker through to second, followed by Paul Undrell in third.
Special mention for home sailor Ian Casewell who wasn't having a good day but worked his socks off to get past Tim Le Mare on the next to last mark and then capsized twenty yards from the finish to let Tim back through!
