An excellent turnout of 39 Supernovas including 13 from the home club turned up at Haversham SC near Milton Keynes on Saturday 27th October for the last Supernova travellers series of the year.
On Friday 17 boats had attended the well received training afternoon run by Richard Pakes and a good social evening was held in the club on the Friday night.
On race day there was wind for a change (a good F3 at times) and it was from the favourable South West allowing race office Barrie Lyman to set a beat the the full length of the lake in a figure of eight course. The wind and the course stayed much the same for all three races.
Race 1 and Paul Undrell (470) emerged as the first boat at the first mark but was gradually overhauled by Richard Pakes (666). These two and Richard Le Mare (397) and the other leading boats got well away - but on a small lake with so many other boats everyone was having their own race.
Race 2 followed a splendid lunch and was sailed over the same course. This time there was a quiet a bunch at the front and the long downwind leg saw much tactical gybing in order to try to gain best position for the leeward mark. Bruce Howett (651) emerged as the front runner having been somewhat buried in the 1st race but again was overhauled by Richard Pakes.
Race 3 had a tightly contested start - and it seemed as a few were over but the video evidence later showed that the front boats hit the line dead on. This time the leaders from the 2nd race which had included Mike Gibson (484) got away and the 1-2-3 was a re-run of the 2nd race.
A great days sailing with good racing all down the fleet and as is the case with the Supernova fleet sailed in a good spirit.
A special mention should go to Peter Hawkin (481)who made the 300+ mile trip from Kielder for his first Supernova Open. He picked up a bottle of wine for being the furthest travelled and a barrel of lager for his prowess in the bar games of Friday night!
The youth prize went to Matt Albitson (481 - 16th) and the "veterans" prize went to Neil Boneham (632 - 7th).
