What a difference a year makes! Last year once the sun burnt the mist away we had a sunny day reaching 18C with light a south westerly. This time around we had no problem waiting for the wind to fill with a strong and gusty Easterly blowing all day. The ambient temperature however never got above 8C, leaving a negative wind chill factor in double figures! With water temperatures hovering just above zero, the order of the day was very good thermals and dry suits.
Unfortunately the weather forecast had put off quite a few of the regular travellers, but those that did make the effort were rewarded with some dramatic sailing and they did provide some spectacular entertainment for the watchers in the Clubhouse. Every boat had it’s share of the excitement with frequent capsizing and positions being made and lost through boats getting caught in irons on tacking.
Local sailor Norman Halstead took the first 2 races despite 3 capsizes on the final leg of Race 2, and promptly retired to warm up. Richard Pakes had secured second place in both these races and went on to win the third in style, securing second place overall.
