With a strong home fleet and visitors travelling from as far away as Cardiff a fleet of 31 boats enjoyed tight racing on a beautiful sunny day with a light breeze.
For those who arrived early Friday night entertainment was provided with the infamous STIG challenge. This proved to be great fun with Jonathan Pakes taking the final honours although Jeff Tucker and Richard Pakes were still in the bar at 2 a.m. trying to beat Jonathan’s time. (Those who have not yet met the STIG should make a point of attending next years open).
The format was 3 races with 2 to count. 1 Race was sailed in the morning followed by lunch and 2 back to back races in the afternoon. The good nature of the class was evident throughout the day and was a necessity as many of the marks were very congested in the early stages of each race. As groups broke away distinct “races within” took place, this enabled everyone from the front to the rear to enjoy their “battle” for position.
Race 1 –This race was dominated by Matt Undrell who had taken a break from his Eurpoean 29er campaign just so he could show dad Paul who was the boss. Mark Giles provided the only real opposition to Matt in the early stages of the race. Unfortunately for Mark he was eventually overhauled by Richard Pakes and nearly let Mike Gibson through on the last beat when tangling with his mainsheet.
Race 1 Results– 1 st Matt Undrell, 2 nd Richard Pakes, 3 rd Mark Giles 4 th Mike Gibson, 5 th Chris Hawley
Race 2 – If the fleet thought the first course was bad they were about to be surprised by the new course. The course endeavoured to take in every bouy that was covered by a wind shadow from the surrounding trees which made for some interesting rounding manoeuvres. (If only the OD could have stuck with the original course!) The wind was still variable and this was to influence the places throughout the race. Matt Undrell and Steve Hawley managed to break clear of the main pack early on in the race with Steve Hawley taking the honours. In the following pack Mike Gibson managed to hold off strong competition from Richard Pakes and Paul Earnshaw. On the final run Earnshaw took the port side of the course and managed to find a gentle breeze just before the final mark that took him past Pakes. This would prove decisive in the final positions.
Race 2 Results – 1 st Steve Hawley, 2 nd Matt Undrell, 3 rd Mike Gibson, 4 th Paul Earnshaw, 5 th Richard Pakes
Race 3 – In the light fluky conditions it was crucial to achieve a good start. In this last race Barry Winter (Alias JockNova) managed to sneak around the first mark closely followed by Earnshaw and Undrell. It was this pair that pulled well ahead of the following pack. The lead position changing places on several occasions but once again it was Undrell who was to take the honours. Steve Hawley, who has shown his light wind expertise throughout the season, eventually passed Barry Winter to take 3 rd place.
Race 3 Results – 1 st Matt Undrell, 2 nd Paul Earnshaw, 3 rd Steve Hawley, 4 th Mark Giles, 5 th Barry Winter
The turn out of 31 boats was great to see and tight racing was the order of the day. A little more breeze would have been welcome but overall the fleet enjoyed 3 good races in glorious sunny conditions. The excellent prizes were again provided courteous of Hartley Laminates, Richard and Mark being unable to attend the event due to showing off the Supernova at the Southampton Boat Show. Thanks to all the helpers at Haversham who proved to be excellent hosts, next year we hope to break the 40 boat barrier.
