...Supernova Open Cotswold SC 20th May 2006

The weather forecast was wet and blustery. The wet did not arrive but the blustery certainly did!

22 supernovs attended in total but only 19 entered the first race and only 15 finished in the blustery changeable conditions. In the lead in the first three laps of the first race was Richard Pakes (639) from Hevesham, whilst second and third place were contested by Steve Hawley (492, Severn) and Mike Gibson (484, Bartley). Steve held second on the first lap but slipped to third place on the second and third laps. However, on the final lap Mike Gibson took the lead followed by Richard Pakes and then Steve Hawley. A consistent fourth place was held by Jeff Tucker (573, Heversham) for all four laps. Fifth place was taken by Dave Everett (622, West Oxford) who pulled back from seventh place on earlier laps. Many capsizes and other wind related events were given over to a superb lunch being served in the clubhouse (soup, ham salad, cheese, fruit and coffee).

The second race started with possibly stronger gusts of winds and only 11 started (was it the wind or the lunch!). Consistently first in all the laps was Richard Pakes with the same battle being played out between Steve Hawley and Mike Gibson with Mike holding onto second place and Steve taking third place. Fourth place this time was held for all laps by Neil Boneham and fifth place taken by Jeff Tucker. The third race was held back to back with the second but only 8 entered this race - a sign of the strong gusty conditions. However, it made a good show form the shore. Mike Gibson took an early lead on the first lap but slipped back to second place on the succeeding laps to Richard Pakes who took first position. Mike came in second followed by Steve Hawley who managed to hold onto third place despite falling back to fourth on the second lap when Neil Boneham overtook. Neil took fourth place and Jeff Tucker managed to take fifth place from a slower first lap. The endurance prize was taken By Sam Hood (557, Cotswold) for determination to finish all three races despite several capsizes and battering by the weather.
