...Supernova Open Bolton SC 1st April 2006

5 Supernovas traveled from as far afield as Oxford and Cardiff to compete in the Supernova Open at Bolton SC. The wind direction provided some challenging sailing conditions, with strong gusts up to force 4/5, big shifts, and close racing being the order of the day.

The first race began after a brief hailstorm, and the lead boats rounded the windward mark to a flash of lightning and a loud clap of thunder ! Hartley quickly built up an impressive lead, pursued by Wild, Gibson and Flitcroft. It took half a lap for Wild to reel-in Hartley, and there followed some close racing as the wind dropped and the sun came out at the start of the second lap. This left Hartley still ahead, but allowed Flitcroft and Gibson to catch up. At the last mark, Flitcroft had worked his way to the front of the fleet, but tacked off too early, allowing Wild to take 1st, Gibson 2nd, Flitcroft 3rd, Hartley 4th, Moodie 5th and a good result for Lockyer in 6th.

After lunch, Wild and Hartley continued their battle in a grueling 5 lap race, with Wild this time coming out on top. Flitcroft managed to pull away from Gibson, who had Boneham hot on his heels. A squall at the last mark caught out Hartley who recovered well, but allowed Wild to consolidate his lead and cross the line again in 1st place. Flitcroft wasn’t close enough to catch Hartley who crossed 2nd, with Gibson 4th, leaving Hartley, Gibson and Flitcroft on equal points. Boneham was 5th and Tucker 6th.

A prolonged gust at the start of the 3rd race caught out several people, and caused a few capsizes, much to the amusement no doubt of Wild, who was by then observing from the bar ! First, second, and third places were hotly contested by Hartley, Flitcroft and Gibson, with some very close racing and fast planing reaches. Hartley pulled through to first at the penultimate mark, and held on to win, with Flitcroft a few boat lengths behind, and Gibson a close 3rd, Boneham 4th, Robinson 5th and Moodie 6th
