...Northampton Open 21st May 2005

The varying weather conditions at Northampton sailing club on 21 st. May provided a variety of challenges for the 21 Supernova helmsmen, the race officers and, in the last race, for the safety boats.

The first race in the morning was sailed in rain and light winds, a period of very light changeable winds in the middle of the race produced many changes of position in the middle of the fleet. The race was won by Steve Hawley from Tony Wild and Tony Critchley.

After lunch two races were sailed back to back. Over enthusiasm by the majority of the fleet produced a general recall followed by a major wind shift which required the race officers to abandon the starting sequence and set a new course. Sailing in moderate winds race 2 was won by Tony Wild from Andy Flitcraft and Mike Gibson.

The arrival of a thunderstorm shortly before the end of the final beat of the last race was heralded by a 90 degree wind shift with gale force winds and horizontal rain, this flattened half the fleet and produced plenty of work for the safety team with several retirements. Tony Wild showed his mastery of all conditions by winning this race from Tony Critchley and Neil Boneham.
