Saturday
Race 1 We were scheduled to start at 12pm but the wind was coming, going and shifting all over the place. The race officer delayed for an hour before deciding to set a small course and just go for it rather than abandon. In the light shifty air positions changed regularly throughout the fleet. The wind continued to fill during the last stages of the race with Wild, Gibson, Hollier, Hawley and Woodhead taking honours.
Race 2 The lunch break gave the wind more time to settle and we started on a much steadier force1 to 2. Pakes rounded the first mark with Hollier, Wild, Earnshaw, Gibson, Tucker, Hawley and more in a pack behind, By the next mark Hollier and Earnshaw had slipped through and away. The chasing pack worked hard to get away from each other but still ended up finishing very close indeed with Hollier, Earnshaw, Wild, Pakes, and Flintcroft, the top 5, other very close battles went on and it showed that just one wrong move lost many placings.
Race 3 By this time the wind had risen to a steady a force 3 which helped a few of the ones who suffered unlucky shifts earlier to stay in the race. The same consistent ones were up at the front but there were others threatening the order, with Tucker, Simons, Flintcroft, Moodie, Stevens and Mark Hartley all taking shots. Wild crossed the line first only to find out he was OCS, This left Pakes taking the victory followed by Hollier, Gibson, Giles(former Builder) and Tucker
AGM and Evening.
The committee chaired by Mike Gibson held a reasonably brief (based on former experiences with other classes) meeting reflecting on a very successful year and outlined their plans for 2006.
Neil Boneham outlined and welcomed feedback and ideas regarding the 2006 race calendar hoping to build on the success of 2005.
Our new builders Richard and Mark Hartley gave their reassurance that they would continue to build the class with the same commitment as our former builder Mark Giles. Hartley Laminates now have 3 demonstration boats located in clubs across the country and will be exhibiting at all major shows.
Hilary Rabson stood down as Treasurer after many years of service. Flowers were presented as a token of our appreciation.
Our new class Treasurer will be Ian Casewell.
There followed an excellent evening meal served in the Commodores bar any many (mainly from Haversham SC continued to drink far too much until very late)
Sunday
A damp misty morning met the early risers, but the smell of breakfast and wind on the lake had us all smiling.
Race 1 (Force 1 to 2 and very shifty) The race got an interesting start with a massive shift taking place within the 1 minute gun. This left many starboard enders struggling to get up to the line and many did not cross until after the 4 minute gun for the following Lightning fleet.
This shift enabled the port enders to get away well and some less usual names appeared up the front for a while, with good performances from Simmons, Giles, Hawley, Critchley and Boneham amongst others.
The skill of the consistent ones showed through on a rising breeze and all was not lost to some.
Race 2 More wind! The lighter helms were starting to suffer now and once again the order was shuffled. Wild, Woodhead, Earnshaw, Pakes and Flintcroft ahead this time.
Race 3 After lunch things really livened up and boats were starting to fall now. Mark and Richard Hartley made impressive use of their height and Mark gained an impressive lead. Everett, Carroll and Robinson showed a pace not previously seen in the lighter airs too. At the line it was M Hartley, Everett, R Hartley, Flintcroft and Pakes.
Over the whole of the 6 races the consistency of the top 3 was very obvious and we hope Wild does not retire from the scene to do other things as he is threatening to do.
Thanks goes to Hartley Laminates for sponsoring a very generous prize giving with
Under/Over covers, Foil Bags, Car stereo, dvd player, Snoopers and other car accessories amongst the prizes.
Bolton won the overall club prize(top 3) narrowly beating Haversham.
