...Supernova Sea Championships - Pwllhelli SC 10th & 11th July 2004

23 Supernovas entered for the fleets' annual venture onto the sea, which this year was hosted by Pwllheli. The race officer consulted the fleet and agreed to sail an inverted P course, which should suit this fast single-hander. The format of races was two races on the Saturday sailed back to back and the same on the Sunday but three races.

The fleet made their way out to sea in a good breeze for the first race. All 23 boats got away first time with Mike Gibson taking an early lead followed closely by Tony Wild. They opened up a good lead but were pursued by Graham Blackwell,Tony Critchley and Mark Giles. On the last lap Tony Wild took the lead on the beat making good use of his compass to appreciate the wind shift. He went on to win, followed by Mike Gibson 2nd and Tony Critchley 3rd .

The 2nd race was won and lost on the first windward leg with the leading group taking full advantage of the favourable left hand side of the course. Tony Critchley lead from start to finish, with some excellent sailing from Steve and Chris Hawley who finished 2nd and 4th respectfully with Mark Giles in 3rd. The following groups places changed as a result from Tony Wild being over the start line. Further back in the fleet saw good performances from Ian Casewell and Patrick Rohart.

Sundays three races were sailed in much more breeze, probably a good force 4. This made for some exciting sailing on the reaches and plenty of tired muscles from the beats. As the breeze filled in the number of thrills and spills increased.

Race three saw Stuart Buddan have his moment of glory as he led for much of the race. He was eventually caught and overhauled by Tony Wild. Tony went on to record his second win with Stuart 2nd  and Mark Giles finishing 3rd. These three were followed by the consistent crowd from Bolton who were improving all the time in the stronger wind.

The trend continued in race 4, with all four of the first four places coming from Bolton SC. Mark Giles and Mike Gibson were left trying to catch up down wind. Further down the fleet Stuart Budden seemed to be relishing the sea, Grant Brown getting into the top ten. The winner of race 4 was Tony Wild, 2nd Andy Flitcroft and 3rd Tony Crichley. Jeff Robinson got his best position in the championships finishing 4th.

Race 5 started with the now familiar pattern forming of four boats from Bolton in the lead with a chasing pack including Adrian Snell, Mark Giles and Mike Gibson. The fleet now a little reduced in numbers enjoyed the best conditions of the weekend, taking advantage of two good reaches. The final race saw Andy Flitcroft finally show his true colours by winning, Tony Wild 2nd and Tony Critchley 3rd. Mike Gibson managed 4th after Jeff Robinson failed to get inside at the wing mark and Mark Giles failed to negotiate the gybe on the last mark, leaving Adrian Snell to come in 6th.

Once the fleet had sailed the long beat back, hauled their way up the soft sand on the beach, the final positions were announced in the club house together with a well  earned pint!

The competitors showed their appreciation and thanks to their hosts for their hospitality and hard work in putting on a very successful event.
