...Supernova Freindly at Fishguard Bay Y.C. Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th May 2004

Fifteen Supernova were rewarded with sunshine and a good breeze at this most picturesque Pembrokeshire venue. There should have been sixteen but poor Claudia Waterfall fell and broke her ankle on the Thursday.

On a triangular course with a beat of a mile Adrian Hollier built up a substantial lead.   Behind Neil Boneham bettled with Graham Blackwell and Barry Buzzard with Mark Giles and Roger Postbeschild in pursuit.   While Hollier kept most of his lead to win, Giles found wind on the reaches and was second in front of Boneham with Blackwell, Buzzard and Postbeschild following.

Race two with a slightly shorter beat squared the first reach increasing speeds in the breeze sometimes over 20 mph causing occasional capsizes. Boneham was first to the windward mark ahead of Giles with Jean Simmons, who missed the first race, in close copany with Hollier, Blackwell and Buzzard.   Reaching speed again allowed Giles to pass Boneham and finish first with Simmons inches ahead of Hollier on the line for third and fourth followed by Buzzard and Blackwell.

The bulk of the fleet repaired to Mark and Anne's house for tea and alcoholic refreshment.   The Yacht Club put on a very good meal for us all in the evening, there were 29 of us in all including the race officer and his wife Chris and Vivienne Prior, then a convivial evening in the bar.

Sundays race was intended to start at noon but in the event did not start until 1 p.m. because the safety boat and the committee boats were still aground at noon! The Sunday race followed the now familiar format of this event as a pursuit race at one minute intervals starting in reverse order for the main event.  Here Buzzard worked his way through to win in a close finish with Simmons, Blackwell,  Hollier and Hedley Dowler, the rest of the fleet all close behind.

It was nice to welcome Philip Harries from Oxford S.C., this was the first time he and Margaret Norris had sailed at Supernova events.   The Sunday   evening was spent at the Giles' house in Goodwick with several members of the Yacht Club joining in for a fork supper
