Supernova Sailing Dinghy Race Report

Sea Championships at Portland Sailing Academy

Supernova Sea Championships at Portland Sailing Academy, Weymouth

The 2003 Supernova Sea Championships were sailed at Weymouth at Portland Sailing Academy and run by Portland Castle Sailing Club for the twenty seven visiting Supernovas.   A clean start from a long line in the light breeze with Andy Flitcroft first to the windward mark followed by Mike Gibson, Tom Abbott and Adrian Hollier.   Gibson took the lead to be passed by Abbott while Nick Hoath climbed to third place ahead of Hollier,
Flitcroft and Tony Critchley.

Race two saw some starters getting away on the port tack.   Flitcroft, Critchley, Abbott and John Waterfall got away down the reach.   Abbott took the lead and Flitcroft passed Critchley, Gibson was fourth ahead of Waterfall and Hollier.

Sunday dawned as bright but much breezier.   Flitcroft took a firm grip on race three and led most of the way with Abbott finishing second in front of Gibson and Geoff Childs.   Critchley was fifth and Jeffary Robinson sixth in a race that produced a few capsizes.

Race four and Flitcroft again powered into the lead with he and Critchley some way clear of the pursuing Hollier.   Waterfall crossed ahead of Abbott and Robinson.   The wind at 23 knots was taking its toll at the gybe marks and the water was now much more lumpy.

The final race and Abbott elected not to sail with several other sailors. Nothing daunted Flitcroft again showed the way round with Critchley, Gibson and Hollier ahead of Robinson and Neil Boneham in a much closer race with several boats crossing the line close together.
