Supernova
Open at Ripon SC
18th May 2003.
The Supernova Open Meeting at Ripon Sailing Club on May 18
attracted 16 entries and were greeted with varying conditions from
sunshine to squalls. Race 1 started in moderate to breezy winds
in which Andy Flitcroft (Bolton SC) would have been 1st to the windward
mark but rounded mark 11 instead of 1 leaving the honours to Adrian
Hollier (West Oxfordshire SC) closely followed by Tony Critchley
(Bolton SC), Mark Giles (West Oxfordshire SC), Tim Coleman (Ripon
SC), Grant Brown (Severn SC) and Steve Hawley (Severn SC) respectively.
Hollier led the pack in lap 2 with Critchley challenging and Giles,
Coleman and Hawley remaining in the same positions while Arthur
Nowell (Ripon SC) moved from 8th to 6th place. In lap 3 Hollier
increased his lead to win with Critchley,
Giles and Hawley remaining
in 2nd, 3rd and 4th position with Coleman moving back to 5th place
and Flitcroft following in 6th after fighting his way through the
fleet.
Race 2. Critchley was 1st to the windward mark,
with Flitcroft, Hollier, Coleman, Hawley and Giles threatening.
Lap 2 saw Critchley still leading with Hollier moving into 2nd place
followed by Hawley, Giles, Coleman and Jeffrey Robinson (Bolton
SC) moving to 6th position with Flitcroft now trailing in 8th place.
Critchley lost the plot on the final beat to
the finish line,
Hollier foresaw the situation and sailed wide to take 1st place
leaving a furious Critchley 2nd, Hawley 3rd, Flitcroft 4th and Giles
5th.
Race 3. Hollier rounded the windward mark 1st again
with Coleman 2nd, Flitcroft 3rd, Giles 4th, Hawley 5th and Robinson
6th. Hollier remained in the lead with the same 5 sailors challenging.
Flitcroft fought his way to the front and led lap 3, Hollier dropped
to 3rd place after Coleman with Hawley 4th, Giles 5th and Critchley
now in 6th place. First over the finish line was Flitcroft with
Coleman 2nd, Hawley 3rd, Giles 4th, Hollier 5th. Hollier won the
event with 2, 1sts and took the splendid trophy crafted by Daleman
Potter and Ripon SC member Andy Haigh.
