|For those of you that don’t know Plas Heli, it is the Welsh National sailing centre. This year they hosted the Topper Nationals, Merlin Nationals and International Canoe Worlds, so are well setup in what is regarded as one of the best sailing venues in the UK. It is also a fantastic part of the world for some epic walks, which may appeal to some 'other halves'.|
In addition to what will no doubt be some amazing sailing, this year there will be two social events to ensure everyone has a good time. The Nationals isn’t just about the top few sailors, we want everyone to have a great time and really enjoy the social side of things. We hope this encourages some new faces to attend, regardless of their sailing ability. There will also be social tickets available for other halves, again we hope this encourages a bigger and more inclusive event.
We asked Frank McMullen (81st in 2017 nationals) what he loves about the event and he said:
"What can you not love about the Supernova Nationals... good venues, great racing, fantastic social evenings and best of all, meeting old friends and making new ones."
Expect some further improvements to the buddy groups, so even if you haven’t attended before you will be supported by some more experienced helms.
A summary of some of the main details is shown below – we really do hope you can make it and let’s see if we can pass the 100 mark again for the third year in a row.
Entries will open at the beginning of November 2017, online (and cheque) as usual. Full details will be added to the Supernova website ready for when the entry gate opens.
Discounted entries will in general only apply to those where payment is received before 31 January 2018 or upon reaching 100 boats (if sooner).
Entries close on 15 June – you cannot enter on the day.
The base entry fee is the same as last year (£90), but includes more:
- 3 x days of fantastic sailing – with full safety cover ...
- 2 x socials – including food on Friday and Saturday evenings!
- 1 x event “t-shirt”
Youths and Lady sailors – all entries to 15 June 2018
Everyone we speak to is keen to encourage more Youth and Lady sailors to the fleet.
As a result, these members will pay just 50% of the entry fee regardless of when they register to enter. Note from a logistical perspective these members will need to enter and pay the full £90 and the Association will refund £45 as soon as we can.
Members who have not taken part in the Supernova Nationals before or have not attended in the last 5 years – entries up to 31 January 2018 (or 100 boats).
We are keen to welcome as many new members as we can, and bring back those who have not taken part in a few years.
The Hartley Boats team have agreed to meet 50% of these members’ entry fees, meaning these members will pay just £45. Note from a logistical perspective these members will need to enter and pay the full £90 and the Association will refund £45 as soon as we can.
As if further persuasion was needed, the Class Association will also provide these members (this does not apply to Youths or Lady sailors) with free membership to the Association for 2018. That means these members are essentially just paying £30!
Other members – entries up to 31 January 2018 (or 100 boats)
Other members will also benefit from a 50% discount if we can get 100 boats by 31 January 2018.
All entries will pay £90, and on 31 January 2018 we will check to see how many entries have been received (including the other entry categories) and then the discount will be calculated:
- at least 50 boats = £10 off
- at least 70 boats = £20 off
- at least 90 boats = £35 off
- 100 boats (our target) = £45 off
As a result, you will have around 3 months to drum up support with the other sailors in your club and encourage them to attend. The more entries there are, the less we will all pay! We are hoping to meet 100 by 31 January 2018, so all 100 will pay just £45 courtesy of the incredibly generous sponsorship from Hartley Boats.
For these members, the discount will be provided as part of the registration at the event (and therefore only applies to those who turn up to register)!
