Mk1 hull strengthening

Postby davew190_old » Sun Mar 17, 2013 3:13 pm

Hi

I'm considering adding some extra strength to my old giles mk1 hull 406, I've looked at some of the previous posts describing what to do, talking with some guys down the club who are moth sailors said why don't you use some carbon mat epoxied instead of fibreglass.
Is this ok with the rules? I cant see anything that says no.

Thanks
Dave

I had the floor rebuit in my Giles when it cracked and it is super stiff now. I also had a sheet of glass fibre about 2ft x 2ft on the front quarters where the boat was decidedly un-stiff in any waves.

I am pretty sure I know of another Giles boats of the same era as mine that has had the same stiffening in the front quarters but with carbon sheeting.

Strictly speaking I suppose it is against the rules but having been uncomfortable in the boat in big waves I saw the re-inforcement as a safety issue. Un-PC to say so but unless you start carting away the choccys at open meetings who is going to know?

Dave,

There is nothing in the rules that will prevent you from strengthening your boat in this way. The only clause that might hav applied is the Weasel clause but as this is not going to be over expensive then I believe it is still within the rules.

Please go ahead with the work.

Best regards

Thanks Paul, I thought it was worth checking.

Should't be too expensive £30 tops.

Dave - could you keep us posted with the details of the mod (maybe pictures too) and the effectiveness? I'm interested in doing something similar.
Cheers,
