The new Hyde sail

Postby tim408_old » Mon Feb 16, 2009 5:43 pm

I've been trying out my new Hyde sail and found it somewhat different. It is at least an inch bigger in all directions and much fuller. Has anyone else done a comparison?

Hi Tim,

I think the problem is compare with what? The Banks sails were always quite varied as well. I would be interesting to see how varied the new Hyde sails are with each other. I suspect a few will be evidence at the Winters this weekend.

Hi Tim,

Barry is right. Compare with what? 4 years ago I found my new Banks sail bigger than the original and my new Hyde is bigger and fuller again. Why do you think I bought one!!!!! I just hope I can transfer all that extra sail area into speed. With the extra weight that I've gained over the Winter I will need it!!!!

Maybe at this point with a new sail maker on the scene we can insist on getting the same size for all?
I'm happy to compare my sail against any other Hyde on Sunday, any one else curious?

Good point Tim and I raised that exact point at the AGM last year. It was pointed out that Hyde make the sail for the RS300 and there is a variation with their sails as well.

We cannot allow development in sails to significantly improve perfomance of the boat as that is clearly outside the class rules and will lead to 'cheque book' sailing.

This was never the intention of the people involved in developing the Hyde sail, who have done a great job, (still not happy with the blue bits though!!) and once this sail is established, the problems we had with Banks should be a thing of the past.

What was agreed is that the maximum dimensions, not just the area, of the Supernova sail should be recorded and written into the class rules so that a reference point would be established for any sailor or future sail maker. I'm not sure if this has been done yet.

Notwithstanding the differences in size, the sails clearly set differently on the mast. In my case this is particularly true towards the top. Has anyone tried to compare two similar boats with different sails to see if there is a performance advantage?

Yes Tony it would be good to fix the size.
Thanks from me also to all the people involved with the developement, I think it is a lot better than the banks.
Naw blue's good, goes with my boat and the rescue bods can see which way up I am! :?

I have 3 banks full size mains here - 1 about 7 years old, the other two less than 12 months. Having spread them out together, they all seem to be the same size, only the material is significantly different.
I prefer the old sail for light airs.

The old is noticably lighter cloth than the 2 new, but this issue has already been discussed elsewhere so won't go on about consistency & QA.......

Will be interesting to see if perhaps the chineese can do better?
