Mast position enquiry

Postby ckservices » Wed Jan 02, 2019 1:26 pm

Hi have just bought 459 and am trying to get mast rake correct. Can someone clarify what mast upright actually means? Does it mean at right angles to the boat or to upright dimension as found in technical guide? To get the mast looking upright would mean dimension of over 6300 which doesn’t seem right! Any quick response would be much appreciated as I’m sailing on Friday!

Hi Chris, A good starting point would be 6050 mm measured from the top of the mast to the top of the rudder fitting on the transom as your ‘normal’ setting. Fully upright try 6100 and raked would be 6000. There are numerous other settings that some others use, but you won’t go far wrong with the above. At fully upright (6100) the shrouds should feel reasonably tight. Somewhere between 60 - 100lbs at shoulder height.

Hope you enjoy your sail on Friday, regards John

Hi thanks for your reply. Will use that setting. I guess I just needed reassurance that mast is raked back in it’s normal setting, not at right angle to Hull.

There is a more comprehensive Rigging Guide in the Technical Section under the 'Tuning and Sailing Guide' tab. You need to be logged in to the website to see the tab.

Initial mast rake setup is covered on Page 3 as a step-by-step process.
