Batten Tension

Postby PaulB_old » Sun Feb 02, 2014 12:59 pm

I'm having to replace the batten end caps on my Hyde sail so just wanted to check how much tension people put on the sail battens.

Thanks

Paul

I would just apply gentle pressure until you have a slight curve. There is nothing scientific about it.

However the top 2 need a bit more, but don't over do it or they won't pop when you tack in lighter winds.

Batten tension

Postby Dark Harris_old » Sun Feb 09, 2014 1:18 pm

Hi Paul I'm new to the supernova but been in a few other classes and the basics are the same. As Steve says the top two will make the most difference but if they are a bit tight and the wind drops a quick yank on the cunningham will make the top ones pop. It might be worth looking on the Ullmans sails website and typing in 'full length battens' there is a really good bit of info all about what batten tension does. The tension in the lower ones moves the curve in the sail forward and back which will affect power so if you are only small (like me) then don't copy someone who is 6' and 14 stone! Good luck and don't keep playing with it, much more important to watch the shifts.
