Mast rivets

Postby Riverwatcher » Sat Jul 29, 2023 7:52 am

I have just fitted a new gooseneck, having drilled out the old rivets. All good, except I can hear the remains of the old rivets rattling around inside the mast. I was under the impression that Supernova masts were foam filled, so how come the rivets can move around inside? Is there an easy way to get them out?

I don't think there's any foam inside the later masts - might be wrong. You could try turning the mast upside down and shaking it? Maybe (temporarily) take out the top bearing as well.

As far as I know the masts have never been foam filled. They were supposed to be sealed though so that water couldn't get in which then provided a limited amount of bouyancy. In my experience the sealing was never very good! However any failures in the seal would be far too small to pass a rivet through. If the rivet ends bother you the best way to get them out would be to take the foot off the mast and replace it afterwards. Otherwise leave them inside...
